XML to YAML Converter — Free Online XML→YAML Tool

Paste any XML and get clean, readable YAML in seconds. Runs 100% in your browser with the open-source fast-xml-parser and js-yaml libraries (MIT) — no upload, no sign-up. How to use

  1. Paste or type your XML into the left box — a sample is already loaded on first visit.
  2. The right side updates live as you type (debounced ~250 ms).
  3. Use Copy YAML to copy the result to your clipboard, or Download .yaml to save it locally.
  4. The left input is remembered in your browser, so you can come back and keep editing.

What is it

XML describes data with angle brackets and tag names; YAML describes it with indentation and colons. YAML removes all the angle brackets and closing tags, relying on indentation to show hierarchy, making it more concise and human-friendly. This tool parses your XML with fast-xml-parser (attributes kept as prefixed keys) and serializes it into neatly indented YAML using js-yaml, so you can convert legacy XML configs into modern YAML.

Notes & fun facts

YAML is a human-friendly data serialization format proposed in 2001. It uses indentation instead of curly braces, colons instead of key-value separators, and dashes instead of array symbols, removing all the repetitive angle brackets and closing tags of XML. Today YAML is practically the de facto standard for cloud-native configuration: Docker Compose, Kubernetes, GitHub Actions and Ansible are all YAML. But many legacy systems and services still output XML — SOAP web service responses, RSS feeds, SVG vector graphics, legacy config files. When you need to turn an XML config into YAML for a CI/CD pipeline, or convert a SOAP response into a modern data format, you need a fast, local, server-free tool. This tool does it locally in your browser with fast-xml-parser and js-yaml, attributes auto-kept as prefixed keys, ready to copy and use.

Origin & history

XML 1.0 became a W3C recommendation in 1998. YAML 1.0 was proposed by Clark Evans in 2001. fast-xml-parser is an MIT-licensed XML parser/builder open-sourced in 2017. js-yaml is an MIT-licensed YAML parser/serializer open-sourced in 2011 — both are zero-dependency, browser-friendly modern implementations.
