XML to JSON Converter — Free Online XML→JSON Tool

Paste any XML and get a clean, ready-to-use JSON object in seconds. Runs 100% in your browser with the open-source fast-xml-parser library (MIT) — no upload, no sign-up, works on phone, tablet and desktop. Supports nested tags, attributes, CDATA, comments and namespaces, with automatic detection of number and boolean types. Live preview, one-click copy, .json download, and the input is remembered in your browser. Perfect for developers debugging APIs, enterprise message processing, RSS feed parsing, Office document data extraction, config file conversion and API integration testing — private, free, instant.

How to use

  1. Paste or type your XML into the left box — a sample is already loaded on first visit.
  2. The right side updates live as you type (debounced ~250 ms), or press the Convert button.
  3. Use Copy JSON to copy the result to your clipboard, or Download .json to save it locally.
  4. The left input is remembered in your browser, so you can come back and keep editing.

What is it

XML describes data with tags and attributes; JSON describes it with curly braces, square brackets and quotes. Both can represent nested structures, but XML is more verbose and carries a strict schema (DTD / XSD), while JSON is leaner and is the default for modern APIs. This tool parses your XML with the open-source fast-xml-parser entirely in the browser, automatically detects numbers and booleans, preserves tag attributes as underscore-prefixed fields, and pretty-prints the result with JSON.stringify so you can paste it straight into code or API tests.

Notes & fun facts

XML was the darling of enterprise systems in the late 1990s and 2000s. Almost every legacy enterprise interface you can think of — SOAP envelopes, UDDI registries, RSS feeds, Atom pushes, Web.config files, the internals of .docx and .xlsx documents, SVG vector graphics, Android layout files, Spring applicationContext.xml — is XML. Its tags, attributes, namespaces and DTD/Schema made data structures rigorous to the point of being verbose, but that rigor let cross-vendor, cross-era legacy systems talk to each other. With the rise of REST APIs and Node.js, JSON took over the modern web at 60% smaller, but XML never died: when you integrate with enterprise backends, read open-government data feeds, parse legacy RSS, unpack Office documents, or process exports from ERP systems, you are still diving into a sea of XML. The problem is that you cannot feed XML directly into JavaScript, and modern front-end frameworks do not natively support it. You need a fast, local, server-free tool that parses XML into an object and serializes it as JSON. This tool is that bridge: input XML, output JSON, numbers auto-detected as numbers, booleans auto-detected as booleans, attributes preserved as underscore-prefixed fields, comments and CDATA handled correctly, all running in the browser without ever touching a server.

Origin & history

XML 1.0 was published by the W3C in February 1998 as a simplified subset of SGML (Standard Generalized Markup Language). SGML, in use since the 1960s for aviation manuals and large technical documents, was extremely powerful but also extremely complex. XML cut away 80% of SGML, keeping the core of tags, attributes and nesting, so it could run inside web pages and emails. Throughout the 2000s, XML was the de facto standard for enterprise data exchange: SOAP, UDDI, XSLT, XPath, RSS 1.0/2.0 and Atom were all built on XML. JSON was championed by Douglas Crockford around 2001 and standardized as ECMA-404 in 2013; the rise of REST APIs and Node.js cemented JSON as the dominant web data format. But XML remains irreplaceable in enterprise backends, document formats and configuration files. The fast-xml-parser library used by this tool was open-sourced in 2018 under the MIT license: it is zero-dependency, ESM-friendly, and parses XML documents into plain JavaScript objects entirely in the browser, with no server round-trip.
