CSV to JSON Converter — Free Online CSV→JSON Tool

Paste any CSV and get a structured JSON array in seconds. Runs 100% in your browser with the open-source PapaParse library (MIT) — no upload, no sign-up, works on phone, tablet and desktop. The first row is treated as the header by default, numbers and booleans are auto-detected, quoted fields and empty lines are handled. Live preview, one-click copy, .json download, and the input is remembered in your browser. Perfect for developers processing exported data, converting spreadsheets to API payloads, Excel to JSON, data analysis preprocessing and API test data — private, free, instant.

How to use

  1. Paste or type your CSV into the left box — a sample is already loaded on first visit.
  2. Keep "header row" checked if the first line is column names; uncheck it if fields should be indexed numerically.
  3. The right side updates live as you type (debounced ~250 ms).
  4. Use Copy JSON to copy the result to your clipboard, or Download .json to save it locally.

What is it

CSV (comma-separated values) is the simplest tabular text format: one record per line, fields separated by commas. JSON describes data with arrays and objects and is the standard exchange format for modern APIs. This tool parses your CSV with the open-source PapaParse library in the browser, treats the first row as object keys by default, auto-detects numbers and booleans, and turns each record into a JSON object so you can use the result directly in API tests or data processing.

Notes & fun facts

CSV may be the longest-running data format in the world. From punch-card tabulators on 1970s mainframes to today Excel exports, ERP reports, bank statements, sensor logs and e-commerce order exports, CSV has always been the plainest cross-system data format — no schema, no nesting, no namespaces, just lines of comma-separated plain text. Its strength is that every system can read it; its weakness is that it carries no structural information. When you need to feed CSV into a modern JavaScript app, REST API or data visualization library, you need to convert it to JSON. This tool does it locally in your browser with PapaParse: the header row becomes object keys, numbers become number types, booleans become true/false, quoted fields are handled correctly, and empty lines are skipped. No file upload, no Excel plugin, paste and convert, copy straight into your code.

Origin & history

The CSV format dates back to mainframe tabulation systems in the 1960s. Comma-separated values became a de facto standard with the rise of electronic spreadsheets in the 1970s. Lotus 1-2-3 and early Excel in the 1980s popularized CSV into every office workflow. RFC 4180 in 1990 first standardized its MIME type and format conventions. JSON was proposed by Douglas Crockford in 2001 and standardized as ECMA-404 in 2013; with the rise of REST APIs and Node.js, it became the dominant modern data exchange format. PapaParse is an MIT-licensed CSV parser open-sourced in 2013, known for its robustness, zero dependencies and browser-friendliness, correctly handling quoted fields, embedded newlines, escape characters and edge cases.
