What is it

TSV (tab-separated values) is similar to CSV but uses tabs instead of commas as field separators. The advantage is that fields do not need to escape commas, making it ideal for copy-pasting data from Excel or spreadsheet apps. This tool parses your TSV with PapaParse using a tab delimiter, treats the first row as object keys by default, auto-detects numbers and booleans, and outputs a JSON array.

Notes & fun facts

TSV is an overlooked but extremely practical data format. It is almost identical to CSV but uses tabs instead of commas. This seemingly tiny difference brings a huge benefit: you do not need to escape commas, quotes or newlines inside fields, because tabs rarely appear in human-typed text. This makes TSV the natural format when copy-pasting data from Excel, Google Sheets or Numbers — select a range, copy, paste, and you get TSV. In bioinformatics, TSV is the de facto standard: gene expression matrices, simplified VCF files, BLAST output and GO annotation tables are all TSV. When you need to feed spreadsheet data straight into JavaScript or a REST API, TSV to JSON is the fastest path — no need to save as CSV first, no comma escaping headaches, paste and convert.

Origin & history

TSV has a history as long as CSV, but without an official RFC like RFC 4180, it is more of a de facto standard than a formal specification. PapaParse is an MIT-licensed CSV/TSV parser open-sourced in 2013 that auto-detects delimiters and also supports explicit tab delimiters, with strong error tolerance, zero dependencies and browser-friendly design.
