What is it
Roommates share a home, and every month brings water, electricity and gas bills. Split them evenly, or by what each person actually used — the fair way.
Notes & fun facts
The monthly electricity bill should not start an argument. A fair split by actual usage keeps flatmates happy and the lights on.
Origin & history
Sharing a home and splitting the monthly water, electricity and gas bills among flatmates is a way of life that spread with urbanization and shared housing: roommates divide bills by head count, or allocate each person's share by meter readings and actual usage, so that fairness is transparent. As urban flat-sharing became more common, breaking a single combined bill into each person's fair share became a familiar little calculation whenever young people move in together.
