Origin & history
Threshold reductions, percentage discounts and coupons are products of modern retail: in the late nineteenth century, American merchants began to experiment with markdowns and gift vouchers to draw customers and stimulate purchases. Department stores, chain retail and e-commerce later piled on new twists — threshold deals, percentage discounts, stacking coupon codes — so that turning a list price into a final price became an everyday calculation shoppers work out step by step.
