What is it
Savings bonds pay a published coupon — whether that interest compounds depends on the payment mode. Book-entry bonds earn accrued interest every day you hold them, plus any price difference between your buy and sell price.
Notes & fun facts
Chinese savings bonds were the cautious investor’s “certificate of deposit with better manners” — queues formed on issue days. Book-entry bonds trade daily, so their income has two parts: accrued interest and the price you realize.
Origin & history
Savings bonds (electronic form since 2004, paper before) pay coupons set at issuance; book-entry treasury bonds have been the main interbank instrument since the 1990s, with yields quoted daily. Rates are set per issue and vary by market and date.
