What is it
Pinyin is the official romanization of Mandarin Chinese. Reading a number aloud follows Chinese reading rules (亿/万/千/百/十), and every syllable carries a tone mark (ā á ǎ à).
Notes & fun facts
When reading a phone number, a price or a child’s math exercise aloud in Mandarin, turning digits into natural pinyin reading makes the pronunciation accurate and natural.
Origin & history
The Hànyǔ Pīnyīn scheme was developed by the Chinese Committee for Script Reform between 1955 and 1957 and approved by the First National People's Congress on 11 February 1958, becoming the official romanization of Standard Chinese. In 1977 the United Nations Conference on the Standardization of Geographical Names recommended pinyin for Chinese place names, and in 1982 the International Organization for Standardization (ISO 7098) adopted it as the international standard.
