What is it
This tool bridges the two ways the world counts big numbers. Chinese groups by 万 (ten thousand), 亿 (hundred million) and 兆 (trillion); English groups by thousand, million, billion and trillion. Type a Chinese expression like 1.5亿 or 1亿5000万 on the first tab, and the tool shows the full number plus its English unit form — 150 million. On the second tab, type 2 million 500 thousand, and you get the full number plus the Chinese form — 250万. Perfect for cross-border e-commerce, translation, finance and localization, where the same amount must speak both languages correctly.
Notes & fun facts
Chinese counted with 万, 亿 and 兆 for millennia, while English grouped by thousand, million and billion — and the two systems never line up. Early Sino-European traders kept slates of equivalents: 一万 for ten thousand, 一亿 for one hundred million, so that invoices written in one language could be checked in the other.
Origin & history
The Chinese myriad grouping goes back to ancient Chinese large-number notation, with 亿, 兆, 京 and 垓 already listed in the Mathematical Classic (数术记遗, around the 2nd century AD). The English thousand/million system grew up in medieval Europe, and the word million entered English from Italian in the 13th century. The two systems evolved independently and never aligned, which is why conversion tables have been carried across borders ever since.
