What is it
This tool writes any integer in English words and reads English number words back into digits. It follows standard American spelling: 123 becomes “one hundred twenty-three”, 1,000 becomes “one thousand”, 1,000,000 becomes “one million”, and 999,999,999,999,999 is the largest supported value. Negative numbers are spelled with a “negative” prefix. Perfect for writing checks, filling in forms and teaching kids number words.
Notes & fun facts
Saying numbers in English is built on groups of three digits: hundred, thousand, million, billion and trillion. The hyphen in compound numbers like twenty-four and the “and” in British usage tell a long story of how English spelling and arithmetic grew up together.
Origin & history
The word “thousand” comes from Old English þūsend, and “million” was coined in Italy in the 13th century from the Latin mille (“thousand”), meaning “a great thousand”. Billion entered English in the 17th century, and trillion followed with the growth of big-number arithmetic in finance and astronomy.
