What is it
Renovation surprises come from the budget you did not write down. Area times standard price gives the anchor number, and the 50/30/20 split keeps the follow-up spending in view.
Notes & fun facts
A renovation budget is a map, not a promise. The number is an anchor — the real value is knowing where every part of it goes.
Origin & history
The practice of estimating home renovation by floor area spread as housing became a commodity. In the era of employer-allocated housing, decorating usually meant a simple paint job and a few new pieces of furniture; once commercial housing became the main way families acquired a home, renovation grew into a large, independent project, and the industry settled on pricing by square-meter unit rates, then split between hard works, soft furnishing and appliances. "How much per square meter" became the anchor that owners and contractors use to talk about budget.
