What is it
Every appliance silently spends money every hour it runs. Add what you own, and this tool turns watts and hours into the one number that matters — your monthly bill, plus which device costs the most.
Notes & fun facts
You cannot manage what you do not measure. A few minutes of listing your appliances shows exactly where the bill goes.
Origin & history
The history of paying for electricity by consumption is tied to electricity entering the home. As electric light and home appliances spread through the 20th century, utilities needed a fair way to meter usage, and the kilowatt-hour (one "unit" of electricity) became the world's standard: it multiplies an appliance's power rating by the hours it runs to give the energy used. Estimating bills from wattage and runtime is a natural extension of that metering convention — first work out the units consumed, then multiply by your local tariff.
