What is it
Every pet is a different size, and portion matters. Weight-based feeding gives a safe starting range — adjust by body condition, activity and the specific food's calorie density.
Notes & fun facts
A correct portion keeps a pet at a healthy weight — not too lean, not too heavy. The range is a start; your vet fine-tunes it.
Origin & history
Feeding pets measured portions by weight developed alongside the rise of the commercial pet-food industry. As early as the 1860s, the world's first commercial dog food appeared; through the 19th and 20th centuries, canned food, dry kibble and nutritional science matured together, and manufacturers began printing tables on the packaging: "choose the daily amount by your pet's weight". This weight-based guidance, fine-tuned by age and activity, gradually became the shared convention of vets and pet owners.
