What is it
The old "one dog year = seven human years" misses how pets age fast in the first two years. The standard rule counts the first year as 15, the second as +9, then a steady few per year after.
Notes & fun facts
Pets age fast at the start, then slow down. Knowing their human age helps you understand their stage of life — from playful puppyhood to senior care.
Origin & history
"One dog year equals seven human years" is the best-known rule of pet age — a simple times-seven shortcut that has been around for generations. Modern veterinary research has found that dogs mature remarkably fast in their first two years, and that their later aging is closely tied to body size: large breeds grow old sooner. More refined conversion tables therefore count the first year as about 15 human years, add about 9 in the second, and then increment by breed size each year, with life stages drawn accordingly.
