What is it
Most people underestimate meal calories by 20–30% once cooking oil and portions are included. Looking up each food by its per-100g value and scaling by the actual portion gives a realistic number you can compare with your daily target — and adding several foods shows what a whole meal really costs.
Notes & fun facts
The same lunch can look like "a bowl of rice with some chicken and broccoli" — once each item is counted at its real weight, the 600 kcal estimate suddenly becomes 450 or 800, and planning gets honest.
Origin & history
The calorie became the universal unit of food energy largely through the work of 19th-century American scientist Wilbur Atwater, who built a systematic way to measure food energy using conversion factors for protein, fat and carbohydrate — later known as Atwater factors. His approach gave food nutrition labeling a common calorie basis, and "how many kcal" has since become the everyday language of describing diet.
