Local processing only — the file never leaves your device.

What is it

A PDF is just a stack of pages wrapped in one file. Splitting never touches the page content: each part is a new file that reuses the same pages, so text, images and quality stay identical. The whole process runs on your device with pdf-lib, a small library that builds PDFs from raw objects.

Notes & fun facts

PostScript — the father of PDF — already allowed reusing page objects between documents. pdf-lib takes the same idea: copying a page into a new file is just copying a reference, which is why splitting is nearly instant even on long documents.

Origin & history

The first consumer PDF splitter tools appeared in the late 1990s, and Adobe Acrobat supported page extraction very early on. The idea of copied pages comes from PostScript, whose object model PDF inherited in 1993. pdf-lib itself was released in 2018 as a pure TypeScript alternative to server-side libraries.
