What is it

The same PDF can look quite different depending on which viewer opens it. This page renders each page with the same engine your browser uses under the hood, so what you see is close to the real layout. Everything happens locally: the file is read straight from your disk and drawn page by page onto a canvas.

Notes & fun facts

PDF was designed as a print format, so it describes pages in absolute coordinates — every font, line and image knows exactly where it sits on the sheet. That precision is why it can be rendered faithfully without any online service.

Origin & history

PDF was released by Adobe in 1993 (version 1.0) by John Warnock and the team behind PostScript, and became the ISO standard 32000 in 2008. The rendering engine behind this page, pdf.js, was started by Mozilla in 2011 so browsers could display PDFs without plugins.
