What is it
Merging takes the pages of several documents and packs them, in order, into a single file. Because PDF pages are independent objects, the result is not a screenshot of each page but the original pages themselves — text stays selectable, links stay clickable and nothing is recompressed.
Notes & fun facts
The Acrobat team once described PDF as “a document with a memory of its exact appearance”. Merging keeps that memory intact: every page object is copied verbatim, so the final file is just a longer document, not a flattened picture.
Origin & history
The object model that makes merging trivial dates back to PostScript (1985), which PDF inherited in 1993. Adobe Acrobat offered document assembly early on, and today the same operation runs fully client-side with pdf-lib, first released in 2018.
