What is it
The world is divided into 24 time zones. When it is noon in Beijing, it is still early morning in London and the middle of the night in New York. This tool draws the world as a long rectangle split into 24 vertical strips, one per time zone. Click a strip to jump to that offset and see what time it is there right now. Below, live analog clocks show the current time in major world cities — add your own, remove any, and the list is saved in your browser.
Notes & fun facts
Before railways, every town kept its own local solar time. When trains began crossing countries in the 1840s, dozens of conflicting times made timetables impossible. Sir Sandford Fleming proposed a global 24-zone system in 1876; it was adopted at the 1884 International Meridian Conference in Washington, D.C.
Origin & history
Greenwich Mean Time was established in 1675 to help sailors find longitude. The 1884 conference chose Greenwich as the prime meridian — longitude 0°. Today Coordinated Universal Time (UTC) is the legal reference, and time zones are expressed as offsets from UTC, from UTC-12 to UTC+14.
