What is it
A periodic deposit means you put the same amount into the bank every month. Unlike a lump-sum deposit, interest is paid on each monthly slice for the time it has been saved, so the first month's money earns interest for almost the whole term while the last month's earns almost none. Chinese banks use the accumulation method: interest = monthly amount × monthly rate × n(n+1)/2, where n is the number of months. This calculator applies that exact formula.
Notes & fun facts
Saving little by little works because of habit, not just math. A person who sets aside a small fixed amount every month often ends up with more money than someone who tries to save big amounts occasionally — because the monthly habit never skips a month, and every skipped month would have been a lost month of interest.
Origin & history
Regular savings accounts became popular in the early 20th century as banks looked for stable deposits. In China, the periodic deposit (零存整取) is one of the classic personal savings products, loved for its low entry threshold: you do not need a large lump sum to start, just a fixed monthly amount.
