What is it
Colors can be described by four popular coordinate systems, all describing the same color: HEX is the hex triplet used in web pages, RGB mixes red, green and blue light, HSL describes hue, saturation and lightness, and HSV does the same with saturation and value. Converting between them is math on the same three channels — pick one, get all four.
Notes & fun facts
The web has settled on a 24-bit color space: 256 values per channel, about 16.7 million colors. Your eyes can barely tell two of them apart side by side, but designers still argue endlessly about whether pure black text is too harsh on a white background.
Origin & history
The RGB model comes from early color television in the 1950s, standardized for the web in 1990s HTML. HSL and HSV were formalized by Alvy Ray Smith (1978) in computer graphics research, and the HEX triplet notation became universal with the first CSS color syntax around 1996.
