What is it
A certificate of deposit is a fixed-term bank deposit with a higher rate than ordinary savings, usually requiring a minimum amount. Interest is either paid in one lump at maturity or paid out monthly. The math is simple: total interest = principal × annual rate × months ÷ 12; monthly interest = principal × annual rate ÷ 12. This calculator applies the exact formulas for both payment styles.
Notes & fun facts
Certificates of deposit became popular because they offer a simple trade: give the bank your money for a fixed period, and the bank pays you a noticeably higher rate in return. For people with money sitting idle in a current account, moving it into a CD is one of the easiest "do nothing" upgrades in personal finance.
Origin & history
The first bank certificates of deposit appeared in the 1960s in the United States as banks competed for stable funds. In China, large-denomination certificates of deposit (大额存单) were introduced in 2015, offering a higher rate than ordinary time deposits with a starting threshold usually of 200,000 yuan.
