What is it
Sleep runs in ~90-minute cycles: light sleep, deep sleep and REM alternate. Waking at the end of a cycle feels refreshing; waking mid-cycle causes sleep inertia and grogginess. This calculator lays out 3–6 complete cycles so your bedtime or wake time lines up with a cycle end.
Notes & fun facts
Same 8 hours of sleep, yet one morning you feel sharp and another you drag — the difference is usually where in the cycle your alarm went off.
Origin & history
Modern sleep science grew out of landmark 20th-century studies: in 1938 Nathaniel Kleitman and his colleagues ran a long-term sleep experiment in Mammoth Cave, showing that the body has an internal clock, and in the 1950s he and Eugene Aserinsky discovered rapid eye movement (REM) sleep. Later research confirmed that adults need about 7–9 hours of sleep per night and gave rise to the common practice of planning bedtimes and wake-up times around roughly 90-minute sleep cycles.
