What is it
The advertised exchange rate is rarely the rate you get. A transfer quietly pays three bills: a fixed fee, a proportional fee, and the spread between the quoted rate and the real rate. Only the recipient amount tells the truth.
Notes & fun facts
“Free transfer” ads usually hide the spread. Sending 1,000 at a 1% worse rate silently costs 10 — before any fee. Comparing “amount received”, not the headline rate, is the only fair comparison.
Origin & history
SWIFT transfers (1973+) standardized cross-border wires; banks traditionally charged fixed plus telegraphic fees. Since the 2010s, fintechs compete on the spread, which is why the received amount varies so much.
